An XML is a text file used to detail all URLs on a website. It also includes the information about URLs such as metadata, media on URL, Details of Last updates, Publishing and removing of pages and posts other versions of URL in different languages, and more.
It is created so that web crawls can index the site easily more efficiently. It is not guaranteed that your website will get indexed if you have a sitemap on the website.
Also, old-school SEO always considered having Sitemap into the footer as a URL. but it does not make any sense so it is not recommended to have a sitemap in your footer of the website. But still, for user navigation, it is a good indirect option.
